Keralam is the land of ‘Kera’ (Cocunut) , was became the name ‘Keralam’ and popularly known as ‘Kerala’. Kerala – is considered as ‘ The God's Own Country’, fertile strip of land on the south-west coast of India. In Sanskrit, the name Keralam, means the land added on.
The legend about the origin of Kerala goes thus: Lord Parasurama an incarnation of Vishnu, slayed 21 Kshathriyas and pleaded with God for some place to do his penance. When God refused, Parasurama flung his battle-axe into the sea accross a narrow strip of land, which was Kerala.
Kerala was forged out of the 3 states of travancore, Kochin and Malabar on Nov 1st 1956. Today we celebrate Nov 1st as Kerala day. Kerala is situated on the south-west coast of India . It’s surrounded by the Arabian Sea in the west, Indan Ocean in the south, the western Ghats and Tamil nadu in the east and Karnataka in the north. It has a long coastal line on the west, fertile midland and forest covered highlands on the east.
Kerala is also land of rivers- It is criss-crossed by 44 rivers and their tributaries. The abundant backwaters includes lakes and islands of the sea along the coast. This is a unique feature of Kerala’s landscape and is craze among tourists.
Kerala consists of 14 districts with Thiruvananthapuram as its capital. The small state of Kerala, which represents just 1% of the land mass,is considered to be one of India's most beautiful state. It is a very rural state with most of the population living in villages but is culturally and scenically diverse. Kerala has two national parks, ten wildlife sanctuaries and two bird sanctuaries.
Kerala occupies a long (550km), narrow strip of land in the far south of India. Its coastline is on the Arabian Sea ( part of the Indian Ocean) and its eastern border with the neighbouring state of Tamil Nadu is the top of the majestic Western Ghat mountains. The landscape varies from long golden beaches to cool hill stations and dense green jungle to bustling cities. Its unique feature is the 1,900km of palm fringed backwaters.
